How do I find and recruit volunteers?

A meeting of the volunteer coordinators forum

Does your organisation need volunteers? We can help! We can offer assistance with recruitment and basic selection of volunteers. We can publicise your voluntary opportunity online through The National Volunteering Database and locally in the Volunteer Centre itself, where people calling in to look for voluntary work will be able to view your opportunity. We can also offer advice and information on good practice when working with, and selecting volunteers.

To get started fill out and return our organisation registration form, or contact us directly if you need some guidance.

It'd be really helpful to to network with others

Our Volunteer Coordinators' Network might be just what you need. Staff from the volunteer centre and local volunteer coordinators meet once a quarter for networking, lunch and a brief training session. It's free for volunteer coordinators in Tameside to attend, and we know you're busy so we try to keep it brief.

We realise how busy you all are and for that reason, the meetings are held over the lunch period and food is provided. It's a chance for you to network with other volunteer coordinators in the area. In addition to the networking opportunities, there's usually also time for a small training session. Topics of past forums have included radio interview techniques and a guide to writing press-releases.

We recognise that being a Volunteer Coordinator can be quite isolating and we hope that these events will be an opportunity to share issues, take part in training and have a voice within the voluntary and community sector. It will also provide an opportunity to stay informed about changes to volunteering that are happening both locally and nationally.

How can I recognise and reward the work of my volunteers?

The Volunteer Centre Tameside award scheme was set up in 2005 to recognise the commitment and achievements of local volunteers, it helps you to recognise the hard work and achievements of your volunteers and can give them a feeling of worth and pride in their work.

Bronze (100 hours), silver (200 hours) and gold certificates (500 hours) are awarded to volunteers for time served with an organisation; "outstanding achievement" certificates are also awarded for extraordinary achievements or commitment.

Eleven people were honoured for outstanding achievement at the inaugural Pride of Tameside Volunteer Awards presentation night which took place at Ashton Civic Hall on 1st June 2011.

The presentations were made by the Civic Mayor of Tameside, Cllr Susan Quinn, and the MC for the evening was Andy Hoyle, director of programming at 103.6FM Tameside Radio and presenter of the station’s afternoon show, “Tameside Today”.

Pride of Tameside originated two years ago when Tameside College launched a very successful campaign which highlighted student success stories. The theme has since been expanded to celebrate people from across the borough for their attainments in fields such as volunteering, sport and business.
